The most popular bou bhat packages are Rajbarir (₹950), Nababi (₹980) and Babumoshai (₹985): each has a welcome drinks counter, several starters, a full main course and a live jalebi counter, and Babumoshai adds mutton biryani. The wedding night belongs to the bride's family. Two days later it's the groom's family's turn: the bou bhat (বৌভাত), when the new bride is welcomed into her husband's home and the family throws its own reception. For many families it's just as big a party as the wedding, and the food is what guests remember.

We have cooked bou bhat receptions across Kolkata from our College Square kitchen since 2006. This guide covers what a bou bhat menu usually includes, what it costs per plate in 2026, and how to plan it.

What Is Bou Bhat?

Bou bhat means "the bride's rice". It is held at the groom's home, usually two days after the wedding, once kalratri has passed. During the day comes bhaat-kapor, when the groom gives the bride rice and clothes as a promise to provide for her, and the new bride serves food to her husband's family for the first time.

In the evening the groom's family hosts the reception for relatives, neighbours and friends. That reception feast is what most people mean when they talk about bou bhat catering.
